Obama and the Enviroment.

We were riveted onthe TV while Obama was delivering his victory speech. He promised change and we are, of course, concerned how the enviroment will fare under this change. So off we searched for an article that’ll give an insight of the things to come.  Scientific American has an interesting article on it here.

Here’s a brief rundown of what an Obama win means for the environment:

  1. Support for a Cap-and-Trade scheme to cut U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases to 1990 levels by 2020 and to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.
  2. Support for renewable energy alternatives. Obama has pledged $150 billion over 10 years as part of a renewable energy package (that also might double as a stimulus package).
  3. Support for offshore oil exploration in areas where it is already allowed but that oil companies have yet to drill. Obama opposes exploration in pristine areas such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).
  4. Help out coal producing regions in West Virginia, Wyoming and other states by speeding the development of carbon-capture-and-storage technology.
  5. Continued support for corn-based ethanol.

  • It is nice to see some information about the items that the next President is in support of, and one would wonder how much of these choices comes from his thoughts versus the thoughts of others in the administration. Getting to the root of where ideas come from, and are powered through, does not tend to occur, but it always remains on some of our minds as we think of who the main proponent of each change is.

Most of those on the list were part of his campaign strategy so it’s safe to assume that Obama has a large part in their formulation.
