Earth Day for kids.

Kids and the youth are the future and the earth day slogan for 2009 reflects it: The Green Generation. Earth Day organizers thought it wise to go where it matters most since what we do for nature now will affect future generations.

Earth Day is celebrated around the world every April 22 and started out as a nationwide grassroots effort in the United States to bring attention to the plight of the environment. It has come a long way since its inception by flower children as it is the only event that is celebrated simultaneously around the world by people of all color and faith. However,  it’s getting some serious competition from Earth Hour.

Check out the website for Earth Day and the diversity of celebrations planned for the event this year or organize one in your locality. We can also make our own Earth Day banner. The image shown at the bottom was made by Virginia Beach campaigners. We can also support the Earth Day Network by purchasing the 2009 Earth Day poster and Earth Day t-shirts from their site.

  • Great activity and environmental awareness for kids!

  • My daughter is 2 and she already know about recycling and when she should turn the water off. I have her getting use to turning water off when we are brushing her teeth. I am Native american, so I have always had this passion, now I hope to pass it on.

  • Very essential and important topic. This has to stay the focus for all of us.

  • When my daughter was a kid, every year for earth Day, her school would have a huge sale, in which the kids were expected to bring in all their unwanted toys and sell them to other kids at school that might want them (rather than throwing them away, recycle the toys by finding them a new home)

Any money they raised from this big sale was used to buy square inches of rain forest land, adopt a zoo animal belonging to an endangered species, and other appropriate things.

My daughter took it a step further and she used to clean out our recycle bin of all kinds of glass jars and small clear plastic soda bottles, paint them up, fill them with candy, flowers, or other trinkets, and sell them to the teachers.

They were amazing looking, and not the kind of things you’d want to toss away. Even the paints she used were recycled, unwanted bottles of nail polish that the original owners didn’t want any more. Rather than throwing them away, they gave them to her for her recycle crafts.

  • I am really excited about the recent trend to make the world a “greener” place. I decided to hold a yard sale on earth day to get rid of things I don’t use so that others can use them and they won’t end up in some landfill. I’m sure that “going green” is going to stick around, because there is no denying that the world is in need of changes.

Thanks for sharing your Earth Day experiences everybody. :)

That’s an amazing story!I’m sure she learned her eco-awareness from somebody. :D You must be very proud of her.

  • The young ones are indeed our future.
We need to teach them the right thing to do in protecting Mother Earth.
It would only be effective if we also doing the right thing, so that they would see that we are actually taking care of our Environment. Don’t allow your children see your bad habits as well.

  • Getting kids involved in events like this has to be the way to effect real change. This generation has pretty much blown it so we really need to let the children get involved and hear their voices too. It’s also encouraging to see that more children at schools in the USA are now choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for environmental reasons as well. Maybe there is hope for the future after all.

  • anything that has to do with educating children, who will be our futureleaders, and environment preservation is a good thing to support!
