No, we’re not talking here of the Chinese Zodiac and its 12 animal signs. THAT year will start around a month from this date. The Year of the Gorilla started on December 1, 2oo8.
That’s when the United Nations declared 2009 as the year of the endangered giant primate to highlight their plight due to disease, hunting, and deforestation. A decision probably helped by the discovery of a population of the Critically Endangered Western lowland gorilla.

According to chinese tradition, 2009 is cow(牛）year, Cow means growing, Yeah! A growing year!

2009 is Year of the Ox only because the Gorilla was far off and didn’t hear Buddha’s call. Otherwise, he would have shoved the ox aside, scowled fiercely at the rat for being a dirty cheat, and planted himself firmly before Buddha as the fist animal to arrived.
If that happened, the poor Boar would have been shooed away and not included among the 12 animal signs.
